Have you ever wondered how VoIP Works?

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol and is a technology that allows voice calls to be made over the internet instead of traditional ageing phone lines by converting your voice into digital data packets and sending them across a network.  To make a call, an Analogue to Digital Converter converts your voice into digital signals and compresses it down into small, manageable packets. Each packet is given a destination address so it can be routed to the recipient correctly.

At the other end, a Digital to Analogue Converter reassembles the data packets in the correct order back into analogue sound waves.  When the conversation ends, a signal is sent to the server to terminate the call, disconnecting the devices, ready for the next call to be initiated.

Three Benefits of VoIP.

  • Cost Effectiveness:  VoIP services are often cheaper than traditional landlines because they use the internet.
  • Advanced Features:  VoIP systems offer extra features that would not usually be available with traditional phones, such as call forwarding, voice to email and video conferencing.
  • Flexibility:  VoIP allows for calls to be made from any device with an internet connection, such as computers, tablets and smart phones.  You can easily switch between devices.
